Metaledge President Chris Cambra's
Letter to Congress on SOPA & PIPA Legislation
January 17, 2012
Honorable Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)
501 Hart Senate Office Bldg
Washington, DC 20001
Mr. Senator,
First let me applaud you and your colleagues that have stood up to delaying legislation of the PIPA bill that is currently being debated in the Senate chambers. As a member of the entertainment industry and a proponet of intellectual property regulation, I can understand the need for laws in place in order to protect those owners to reserve their rights to their creations. However, the legislation that PIPA and the SOPA bill that is being debated in the US House of Representatives will only threaten the internet and the growth the internet provides to businesses and artists alike.
The regulations that these bills propose will not only destroy current internet based businesses, but will also stifle the creative spirit and free market the internet provides. New businesses and investors alike will shy away from the internet as a means to conduct business when the fear of reprisal based on government regulations hangs over their heads.
As a result, the overall opportunistic nature of this country is at risk. The now weak economy will continue to suffer further and more Americans will be unemployed. We will dive deeper into debt, and
America as a whole will suffer.
As businesses we are responsible to police our intellectual property ourselves without government intervention. The copyright laws in place protect us as long as we are self vigilent in overseeing our creations and properties. American and international businesses need to understand that it is their responsibility to keep watch over their intellectual property and not government's.
Mr Senator myself along with my colleagues ask that the Senate and the House of Representatives look over these bills very carefully and tread lightly before making any rush decisions on legislation. Overall we feel there needs to be laws in place to protect us from infringers, counterfeiters, and others, but there shouldn't be any gray areas that threaten the very core of the internet, its users, and businesses that rely on the service to conduct our business and livelyhood.
Warmest Regards,
Chris Cambra
